It’s happening again. That thing that Remender promised wouldn’t happen is coming true. Again. For those uninitiated, The End League has had something of a tumultuous life span. What started out as a bi-monthly book soon devolved into a once every six months kind of book, which eventually lead to Remender finding a new artist. This wasn’t a bad thing mind you; Canete’s art is simply stunning in the book and makes it a real treat for the eyes. But what’s happened is that, again, the book has shipped later than intended. I don’t want to go so far as to say it’s been a couple of months, but well, I think its been a couple of months. And what that means for a book as character laden and intricate as this one is that the reader starts off the book lost, and spends the rest of his/her time trying to figure out what the hell is going on instead of simply enjoying the book.

And that’s where I found myself with this issue. While issues 5 and 6 had the series sort of getting its feet on the ground and feeling more structurally sound, this latest delay has sort of sucked the wind out of whatever progress had been made. I spent about 70% of the issue trying to remember what was going on, and even with the refresher provided at the front of the issue, I still had to invest energy in figuring out who people were or what was going on. It’s not poor writing on Remender’s part. I think that this is a solid series with great ideas. It’s just that the space between issues is killing the story. There’s simply too much for a reader to remember from issue to issue when he/she is looking a months in between issues. Hopefully, the span between the issues will be remedied and maybe this issue was only a one time kind of thing. Hopefully.

But what about the issue as a whole? Well, it’s actually really solid. I had to read it twice. Once to figure out what was going on, and one more time to simply enjoy it. After I was able to piece everything together, I enjoyed the heck out of the issue. It was filled with action and fast paced. It began to connect story threads together. It was just a solid issue for the series. A lot of that has to do with Canete’s art, which is simply amazing. He’s one of my favorite artists out there right now, and he just brings this amazing energy to every part of the comic. It’s just fantastic.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
