How can a book be so needlessly complex and so childishly simple at the same time? On the one hand we have a massive cast — four incarnations of Elric, their sidekicks and their enemies, all finally gathered together in one place. But on the other hand, we have a black-and-white struggle where everyone’s screaming about LAW!!! with all the subtlety of Armand Assante in Judge Dredd. Both stories, the simple and the complex, are pretty wearisome by this point, but it’s still giving Francesco Biagini new reasons to draw utterly metal and wacky fantasy doodads. Giant fly-demons! Dudes playing chess with reality! Lost cities at the fulcrum of all creation! If only art this totally prog could go with characters I actually cared about and could spend time with.
