I did not read the original DV8 series, so I don’t have a frame of reference for these characters.  The first issue, though, did a very good job introducing the central characters, and this issue developed the story further.  Rebekah Isaacs’ art is beautiful, and it is really complimented by Carrie Strachan’s colors, which emphasize the natural setting of this book through her use of meticulously varied green, brown, and orange tones.  Issacs’ page layouts appear, at first glance, to be very simple since they tend to use a conventional grid structure, but on almost every page, there is an offset panel or an inset panel that provides a little bit of complexity to the story.

The art is great, but that’s not to say that the story isn’t good as well.  This second issue still felt like set-up, but I do like the Gilligan’s Island/Ewok Village story of this miniseries so far.  The DV8 superhumans (or, Gods?) are stranded on a primitive planet, and in this issue, we learn more about how the different characters have adapted to their new environment.  This all seems to be leading up to a big battle between warring tribes, but I think that I’m more interested in the nuances of how the characters develop relationships to the indigenous population.  The tone, pacing, and beautiful art of this issue really captivated me.
