The DragonAge saga continues in this follow-up to what I thought was a pretty damn solid first issue. This follow up isn’t as good, but it is worth it. The story follows Gleem, a magic-using girl who is an “apostate” mage, or someone learning magic unofficially, and because she lives in a world where mages need to be trained at the Circle Tower, this is pretty dangerous.

I’m not going to spoil the end of this issue, but it’s a pretty paint-by-numbers beginning of a hero’s journey story. Not that that’s a bad thing, only that it feels a bit “been there, done that.” But in a fantasy story this is forgivable. The characters are just interesting enough to keep this from being just another run of the mill fantasy story.

Now, what really sets this comic apart for me is the phenomenal art by Mark Robinson. the colors are vibrant and every character really pops. The character models are very cartoonish and that might not be for everyone. But every character is unique and very expressive, which means the art helps tell the story very, very well.

Overall this is a definite buy for any fan of the video game and for any fantasy fan this comic is certainly worth a look. And hey, even if the story doesn’t get any better it’s still more engaging than 90% of the other video game tie-in comics.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
