Ah Doom Patrol.

This is one of those titles that has a long history so
Silver Age fans love it.
Helped launch the line, so Vertigo fans will
always give it a try.
And was a fore runner of the ground X-Men
originally trod, so will always be relaunched from time to time.

They
keep getting pretty quality, like Arcudi, or at least big name writers,
or Claremont and Byrne.

The problem comes with the fact that fans
really don’t give a damn. I like Giffen and will always give him a
shot, and I get the feeling a lot of people feel this way, which is a
great analog to this title.

People remember it being good in some
former incarnation and buy it again in hopes of good again. I give this
series 2 years at most.

It isn’t bad. It is doing something that hasn’t
been done in few of the relaunches. It’s building off what had been the
previous run had instead of just jumping in with a new status quo.

I
like how all the original characters were profiled and given handles on
how to be manipulated. I was pleasantly surprised by the brutality we
got about half way through the story.

The art was fine. Nothing about
it really stands out.

The preview showed the the birthing pens, and I
think under a more adept artist would have made it much more
impressive. Instead it was just meh.

On the other hand, the back up
story was great. It was exactly what I expected from this group. The
right mix of comedy and action. Having Maguire do faces for a team of
super maleable super heroes is a dream come true. The back up story
really bumps this issue up a point in my evaluation.
