This issue is part 3 of the 4-issue M.I.A. arc, and it continues along at the same pace as the previous 2 issues. This arc is very atmospheric, which is in keeping with what I really like about DMZ–lots of gorgeous images of dilapidated buildings, graffiti, and rubble. Not a lot is happening in terms of the story right now, but this issue has a really comfortable, slower pace that I appreciate and that seems appropriate as the series moves into its final act (or at least what feels like its final act).
The influence of Transmetropolitan on this book is growing very clear here, too, especially since most of this issue is devoted to Matty Roth coming to terms with his role as the witness/historian of the DMZ. It’s almost as if Brian Wood asked himself, “What would Spider Jerusalem be like if he was really, really sad and helpless?”
