This was my first issue of DETECTIVE COMICS since #1, and, surprise surprise, I came back because of "Night of the Owls". I don't have any idea how this story fits (or doesn't) with what else has been going on in DETECTIVE COMICS - all I know is this solicit about some guy named Mr. Toxic and Batman being poisoned doesn't seem to have anything at all to do with the contents of the issue itself. The story's actually a glimpse inside Arkham Asylum on the Night of the Owls, and plenty of Bat-villains make minor appearances, plus a slightly larger role for the Black Mask. It should surprise no one that a Talon attack (target: Dr. Jeremiah Arkham) sends part of the Asylum into chaos. The writing's solid, mostly from Arkham's point of view, and though the story doesn't really advance the Night of the Owls in any notable way, it's a good solid read - more internally worthwhile than, say, the BATWING tie-in issue. The Two-Face backup left me a bit cold. The writing just didn't grab me and the art - well, it was very dark. Not really a selling point for the issue, I'd say.
