My pick of the week. Scott Snyder, Mr. American Vampire himself, steps up to the plate and delivers a touchdown of a comic. That’s right, this comic was so good one sports analogy isn’t enough. Mr. Snyder bakes up a dark n’ gritty Batman story about Killer Croc, or maybe Mad Hatter, or maybe neither. This story really focuses on the crime book aspect of Batman, which is good because it’s got Detective right in the title. The writing is very well paired with the sharp angled work by Jock, punctuated by excellent colors by David Baron. I’m a fan of the Jock-man and this is among the tippy-top of what I’ve seen from him. The back-up, drawn by Francesco Francavilla is likewise a wonderfully noirish (or perhaps noiresque) dip into the life of all-star sideliner Commish Gordon and is a welcome addition to this stellar start.

Story: 5 - Excellent
