Destroyer. I knew absolutely nothing about this character. All I knew was that the original creative team behind "Invincible" had put this out a while back. "Invincible" was/is GREAT. May be this would be at least good. It was better than good. It was GREAT. The first few pages were some fun, slam/bam action with healthy sprinklings of gore and banter. So far so good. But a few pages in, Kirkman really surprised me. This isn't just another piece of action spectacle. It's an exploration of the last days of an aging hero with a bum ticker. For every piece of over-the-top action. We have quiet moments of family and reflection as Destroyer prepares for his departure, hoping to leave the world a better place, ensuring a legacy of value and duty. I especially love the mundane quirkiness of the world this book inhabits, exemplified by Destroyer's wife making potato salad with a robotic prosthetic arm. The art is some really great storytelling. Although I prefer Walker's earlier style of art, as seen in the early "Invincible" arcs, it really clean and dynamic. What a great surprise this turned out to be.
