The last issue was a great breather in between arcs that showed the history of the fantastically absurd love triangle between Xanadu, Jason Blood, and Etrigan. It was great to have a break after the battle for Little Spring to get into the background of a couple of the characters. This issue wasted no time launching them on their next adventure, managing to introduce the city of Alba Sarum, show the group’s reactions to Merlin’s death (teased at the end of last issue), and have them set sail to invade the mystical island of Avalon. Cornell manages to keep the pacing just right, so we feel that a lot is happening but that nothing is rushed or glossed over. While I feel the breakout star of the series is the morally ambiguous Vandal Savage, every character gets highlighted in a special way. Cornell also manages to end the issue with an awesome reveal that introduces a pretty formidable new villain, and reminds us that Etrigan is a dick. Anyone who has been waiting for a great jumping on point for this books, should check this issue out. It starts a new story and devotes a couple pages at the beginning to introduce each character.
