On the road to Alba Sarum to claim their reward for protecting Little Spring, the Demon Knights debate the finer points of each others’ characters. There’s scattered distrust aimed at Vandal Savage, and rightfully so, but the main feature of this issue is Exoristos finally confronting Madame Xanadu with the question: does she love Jason or Etrigan?

The bulk of the issue is Xanadu’s story of being an apprentice to Merlin in Camalot, when she was named Nimue. This avoids retelling much about Jason’s fateful encounter with Merlin, seen much earlier, that it does mention that scene where it would fit in the tale.

But it goes further, telling of their love, and how they grapple with the reality of Etrigan, and what leads to the current situation. It’s not a bad story. It’s not a great one. It does what it needs to, I guess.

The art is attractive as ever, even if there aren’t any really impressive visuals here. Not in the same way that some from past issues have, with battle carnage and such. There’s still definitely some good-looking stuff, though.

After this story, though, I only feel certain that I’m not sure who to trust. Which is kinda how I felt before it. So…does it matter? Maybe not.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. At first I was excited to finally get the real story of who Xanadu really likes more. But as I was reading I was lamenting the fact that that mystery would be over. And then the ending put things back into question again. Well done, Mr. Cornell! Possibly my favorite issue of the series thus far.

    • I kinda saw that particular twist coming…I find Xanadu’s story plausible, but she was always an unreliable narrator. The question is how well they use this device over time…it could either be very good or get real old real quick.
