Minor spoilers follow…

It’s funny, this comic is always the last one on my pull list I read, and yet it’s always one of my favorites once I’ve actually read it. Maybe part of that is because the constantly twisting and turning and extremely bizarre story can almost always be summed up as “CRAZY SHIT HAPPENS”, and therefore the cliff hangers are never more promising than “Next month: MORE CRAZY SHIT.” I’m never on pins and needles needing to know what happens next, but it’s always entertaining as hell!

The crazy shit trend continues in this issue, with most of our (anti)heroes starting out as horrible (or in Etrigan’s case, slightly more horrible than usual) monster versions of themselves…which I guess happened last issue, but I don’t really remember it. This series throws so much craziness at you I’m numb to it by the final splash page. What follows is what you would expect: lots of hilarious dialogue and epic monster fights.

While the art is excellent and makes the big monster brawls fun to look at, the real draw of this series is the excellent ensemble cast. This is probably the best character writing in any of DC’s “super hero team” books. Every character has a clearly defined personality, and the way they butt heads and interact with each other is priceless.

My only complaint continues to be the overarching storyline. It’s just not all that interesting. I realize that with fantasy it’s more about what happens along the way than the end point, but I find myself not caring about their quest at all, and I’m not sure if my enjoyment of the monster-fight splash pages and funny character based dialogue can maintain my interest in this for the long haul…Then again, I’ve stuck with it for 11 issues, so who knows?

One more thing concerning the art: The full page panel of Etrigan and Arthur locked in battle. SO AWESOME.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good
