This was really good, while feeling very much like a Brian Wood story I’ve read before.

As always Becky Cloonan’s art is amazing. She has that knack that Jamie McKelvie and Amanda Conner and a few others have of drawing realistic woman that are easy to fall for on first sight. Marlo is quirky, she lives her life in accordance to post-it notes she writes to herself and leaves all over her world. Cloonan takes this idea and makes it a lot more endearing by making the notes themselves very fun and cheerful.

The scene early on with Marlo at her bathroom mirror getting ready and all we see is her back and a large mirror completely covered in post-it notes. Some notes are straight forward: “Tues – new towel”. The ones that help lighten the scene are the ones that read “lip gloss rules” and “Hello Beautiful”. That she has fun with her neurosis fleshes Marlo out in a really engaging way.

I don’t know if the story hit me with as much impact as it might have otherwise because it felt very much like a story that would have been at home in Brian Wood’s Local. Specifically the story that it reminded me of was the issue with the guy who kept sneaking into the girls apartment and leaving pictures and notes of himself for the girl while she was away at work. There not the same story, and there both doing different things, but there is something about the spirit of both stories that make them feel very closely tied together in my head.

Anyway, yet another great Demo issue. If you haven’t liked the darker tone of the first two issues or are more of a fan of Local, definitely check this issue out.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
