This book defies my own internal logic. It’s about a guy in an (now overly-complicated) orange and blue supersuit with a huge freakin’ sword cutting people in half and displaying about as much personality as a close-to-retirement-public sector employee at a help desk. It has too many pages with “widescreen” panels and after three issues the story’s not really going anywhere. That isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement for a book that got the green-light to be one of DC’s “New 52!”. By rights, all the internal monologueing about “being a warrior” and “I’m the BEST” combined with Image-era splash page after splash page SHOULD make me quietly put this book back on the shelf and shake my head as I walk away, but it doesn’t. Instead, this big, goofy action movie trapped on paper keeps reeling me back in. This book is fun, and Joe Bennet’s art has a fluidity to it that gives the action sequences forward motion.

It’s not Shakespeare or Sandman, but that’s okay. I don’t need it to be. And apparently I don’t need it to display any of the aspects of a comic book I usually look for. What I DO need is this monthly dose of explosions and penetrating knife wounds to retreat to when I just want to be spoon-fed some mindless entertainment.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 3 - Good

  1. Agreed! I’m loving it and I’m completely shocked by that.
