So Roy Harper, as far as I understand it, has traveled to Japan to rescue Killer Croc, who he thinks has been kidnapped by triads, and he is doing this because Croc once refused to kill him when he was feeling suicidal that one time. I have not read any DCU Presents before, so I may have got that wrong, but I think that is it. I mainly bought this book for Japanese artist Ricken, who’s deviantart page boasts some fantastically impressive pin-ups. This being her first work under a major publisher, I thought I would check it out. I was left happy, but not blown away by any stretch. This comic if anything shows just how thick the line is between a pin-up style drawing and, to borrow a phrase from the great Will Eisner, a piece of sequential art. The action sequences in this issue do feel a little stiff, but there are certain poses in certain places that look incredibly natural and human, particularly on the last page, where we get a page of the Outlaws kicking back after a long day; it feels homely and relatable, and invokes a real sense of warmth that a lot of these types of scenes usually lack. I look forward to see where Ricken goes next, she is a great talent.
