This is just a disappointing end to a book that fizzled shortly after it started. While the framing sequences may have been charming at the beginning, they've now completely taken over the book. It makes absolutely no sense to give an overview of the DCU that just seems like a random list of events as seen by someone very remotely connected to them. I think the idea was sound, but the execution hasn't lived up to the promise.
As for the Blue Beetle tale: I'm a Blue Beetle/Ted Kord fan, but there were some major problems here. Of course the art was beautiful, but continuity seems to have no place in this tale. While not every artist is completely familiar with the backgrounds of the characters they work with, why does Beetle go through his entire career with the League, get fat, and then get back in shape only to be greeted by a Justice League that appears to be the original Giffen/DeMatteis run? I mean, that Black Canary costume was changed for a reason.
Art: 3 - Good
Yeah, I agree. I liked the idea of the book and the first few issues were good. But then the waaay overly nostalgia “let grandpa tell you a story”-style framing sequence began to get really bad. At a certain point, all that nostalgia is just damn embarassing, y’know. “Marvels” did it right. A few other series have done it right. But…Imagine if sometime in the year 2070 there’s a tv series with a bunch of 80-year-olds talking about something like Power Rangers and CRYING over how much they loved old episodes. That’s what this felt like. It made DC nostalgia seem foolish by framing it in such a cheezy overwrought way.
It could have been executed better if they didn’t use such a cliched, predictable framing technique. It sucked the life out of my interest in the actual history being presented.
