The tag line says “THEY’RE EXACTLY WHAT YOU THINK!”  Which I translated to: a bunch of characters you never heard of being shoved together into a mean team in order to sell books.  I don’t know if I was right or not.  I do know that I have no idea who any of these characters are.  Except Thorina (apparently called The Enchantress), who I think I saw in Avengers: The Initiative shortly before I stopped reading it.

This issue definitely could have down with an old-fashioned Claremont style two page spread, where each of the characters’ names and powers were listed.  While the book never got to a point of fun, it wasn’t an arduous read.  Just sort of…hmmm.  With a last page reveal that you could actually see coming on your way to the comic book store, before you picked this up.

The artwork was ok, but another example of how the current Marvel editors have a massive hardon for unnecessary shadows.  Ooooh, it’s Dark Reign, let’s make it look like it’s always dark outside.  Ooooooooooh.  Seriously, do all the characters hold flashlights to their faces while they talk to one another?  Check out page thirteen, and tell me that it doesn’t look like they’re sitting around the fire telling ghost stories, instead of out at a  bar illegally drinking.  It looks as though the idea of the page is that the bar itself is glowing.  Regardless, the shadowing is totally unnecessary.

  1. Hmmm…thanks for the early review. Now I’m thinking twice about getting this!

  2. I was on the fence about getting this (to the point where I had pulled it, then deleted it twice).  As a DC guy trying to ease into the Marvel universe, this review convinced me to look elsewhere.  Thanks!

  3. I agree more or less, but the characters interested me enough to have a go at the second issue.

  4. Picked this up because I love Cornell but now you’ve got me worried…..
