It seems like at least five books come out each week with a Dark Reign banner. Some of these books just barely tie-in to the main plot of Dark Reign, but one would expect a one-shot about the main characters in the series to be important. Unfortunately, nothing new occurs. Sure, there's a lot of talent on the book, but the quality of the stories is poor.
The first story (by Johnathan Hickman) focuses on Dr. Doom. This might've been a good story (albeit waaaaay too early) if it wouldn't have just been a dream! Seriously, a dream?!?!?! Adi Granov provides some of his usual polished art. It works great in the issue, especially since their is a lot of armor (Doom and Iron Patriot).
The second story (by Matt Fraction) centers on Emma Frost. This story is basically a recap of all the hardship Emma has endured in her life. I understand that there may be some new readers, but I really don't need a recap of the destruction of Genosha. Yes, we get it, Emma is really tough (as the really poor symbollism of Emma in diamond form at the end of the issue indicates) and she's a good guy now.
The third story (by Rick Remender) is basically a prequel to his new mini-series on The Hood. The story is okay, but nothing too special.
The fourth story focuses on Namor. Although this story makes us look at Namor in a more sympathetic light, it fails to inspire any interest.
The fifth and final story is probably the best. The dinner between Loki and Dr. Doom is wickedly fun. This story moves along a plot from the Thor series (which if you aren't reading, pick it up! Now! You'll thank me later). The characterization in this issue is spot-on and a lot of fun.
Unfortunately, this issue isn't worth the $3.99 it's being sold for. Unless you're willing to shell out that much money for an issue in which no plots are advanced and has only one good story, this issue isn't for you. Ultimately, I don't blame the writers. They were given very little space to play around with these characters. They should have been allowed to advance the plot points of Dark Reign.
