Over all it was good but definitely not the spectacular that I was expecting from all the great creators.  Very few of the stories would be worth buying if they were stand alones.

I will comment on them individually:

Concrete:

I had never read any of the old Concrete stories so for me it would have been helpful if they had started with a paragraph explaining his condition, family situation, etc. As some one who had no info he just seemed to be a clone of the Fantastic Four’s Thing.  Right when it seemed to get a little more interesting with his family it ended, and it’s not continuing.

Marked Man:

An average gangster story.

Blood:

It was a semi long intro, we still haven’t met the main character.  So I wont give a verdict on this one yet.

Finder: Third World:

This was my favorite story in the book.  Good sarcastic comedy, sorta reminds me of the Groot/Rocky Raccoon backup in Annihilators.  Really very good.

Mr. Monster:

I liked the retro art, the story was trying to be funny, but I didn’t laugh at all, not even a giggle.

Xerxes:

Looks like it will be very good.  We only get to look at 4 pages of it though, and that 4 pages is made up of only 5 panels.  Considering this was a cover story it would have been nice to get a little longer preview.

A Tiny Man:

This was a text piece by H. Ellison.  I liked this story a lot, it was very thought provoking.  (I have to admit I have never been a fan of text pieces in comics, it defeats the whole purpose of having comics as opposed to normal books.  If you are expecting a H. Ellison comic story you may be disappointed.)

Murky World:

A good sword and sorcery tale.  Fast moving action with some dry humor.  Probably my second favorite story in the book.

Star Wars:

Set after the end of Return of the Jedi, only the beginning of the story is shown here.  Most star wars stuff starts slow and builds as plot threads come together so I wouldn’t judge it from just this.

Snow Angel:

Definitely the most original story in the book.  It was very good, after reading it you want to know more about the lead character (which I consider a very good sign)

  1. pretty much my thoughts exactly….you just went into more depth with the review=) Especially on Concrete….i’ve never read him before even though i know of him. Would have been helpful fora back story blurb like they do in some superhero comics.

There is so much more to compilations that just the creator lineup and page count…at some point you get to judge it by the content on the page.

I’m glad i wasn’t the only one who was kinda underwhelmed by this…i don’t feel like that guy who just doesn’t get it, when everyone else does.

  2. Great review. Overall, I was not impressed by this, I guess I expected more. I could have done without the lengthy Frank Miller interview.
