When I saw the scheduled release of Daredevil Noir, I knew I would have to pick up the first issue this week. Given the style of superhero that Daredevil embodies, the Noir backdrop, and my love of both; this seemed to be a perfect matching of character, style and audience. I was excited to say the least. This was only built up after seeing what the Marvel Noir series was able to do with my favorite superhero, Spider-Man. I loved the way the classic elements were taken and viewed through a different lens to give us all a fresh, entertaining perspective of a hero we knew and loved.

So this is the state I found myself in when I flipped open Daredevil Noir #1. Overall, I can’t say this book dissapointed me. However, I can’t really say it lived up to my expectations, either.

As far as the story is concerned, the only way I can describe it is: good enough. Irvine really seemed to hold back his creativity when it came to tinkering with the world of Daredevil. While I know the changes in the other Noir titles weren’t exactly drastic, the changes in DD Noir pale in comparison. Maybe the mixed-reviews of X-Men Noir had something to do with it. Maybe it was the fact that The Man Without Fear is already pretty gritty and close to the streets as it is. Either way, Irvine’s story didn’t really make the story feel like it was in the Depression Era as much as the other Noir titles.

However, the art more than carried its weight in this book. While the written story didn’t do much to put me into the Noir setting, the visual storytelling immersed me in it. The muted tones and neo-pulp coloring style were a joy to look at. It’s rare that I read a comic book and the word cinematic comes to mind, but this was definetely one of those times. Visually, this book was what I expected and more. Well done, Tom Coker, well done.

All in all, the story didn’t kill this issue, nor did art make it entirely spectacular. Daredevil Noir #1 was a good book that will hopefully keep in step with (or surpass) the rest of the Marvel Noir books in the coming issues. It’s piqued my interest and more or less insured that I’ll be picking up the next issue, and I suppose that’s what really counts in a first issue.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
