There is no need to buy this comic book.  Then again I suppose you could argue that there is no need to buy any comic book.  Your enjoyment of this title is going to largely depend on whether or not you really enjoyed the Daredevil annual this year, and whether you really want to read the continuing adventures of the Black Tarantula.

Reading it I felt like there was nothing that I was not already getting either from Brubaker’s Daredevil or Criminal.  Having been lukewarm on Brubaker’s DD for the last arc or so it was not as if I was really in need of another dose of his take on the character and not having any real affinity for the Black Tarantula or his story that started in the annual, this really was not for me.

Having said that no Brubaker book is ever bad, and this is well done.  If you must read everything that Ed does then you’ve already read this.  Otherwise I’d suggest skipping it and rereading some Captain America.

  1. From what I’ve read in the other reviews Ed Brubaker helped to develop the plot more then be a primary writer for this issue, like his deal on the Immortal Iron Fist book. Ande Parks has been said to write the script primarily, I’m not sure if this was also the case for Daredevil Annual.

Anyway I’ll give it a shot, how’s the art on this issue? I saw the preview for it online, looks similar to Lark’s art on the main book even though its Chris Samnee on the pencils.

  2. It’s very Lark-esque.  Which is actually a very nice touch, that the DD universe seems to look consistant and has for years since Lark and Maleev (who was on with Bendis) have similiar styles.

  3. I agree there’s nothing earth-shattering here, but I’ve personally enjoyed the annual and this issue together a bit more than the last couple arcs of DD’s main plots.  I like what Parks and Brubaker have done with this side character, and I think  he makes a good point of comparison for Matt.

  4. My feeling is that the characters are kind of too similiar.  Or at least they’re being handled too similiar, so I don’t feel like I’m getting any nutrition out of BT that I’m not getting from DD already.

  5. Like others have said, nothing too Earth-shattering here. It was a good story with good art but nothing to write home about. I did think that some of the transitions between scenes in the story were a bit abrupt like I had skipped a page but I didn’t. Especially after Black Tarantula shows up on Matt’s door step, then is healed and then they are off to save his wife and kid. Over all it was just a bit jumpy.
