When I heard Diggle was taking over Daredevil, I worried that he was going to ruin one of my favorite comics.  I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed his first few issues.  But it feels like years pass between issues, and I have no idea what’s going on anymore.

This issue was filled with bad action movie lines like “If either of us are going to survive this – – you have to TRUST me.” and “Mercy?  That word has no meaning here.”  Impressive when you’re eleven, but compared to the Bendis and Brubaker runs, it’s flat and lifeless.

It might not be Diggle’s fault, though.  I looked up his co-writer, Antony Johnston, and his website is just rife with cliche advice about writing.  Advice one should probably seek out from someone they’ve actually heard of.

On the bright side, Hollingsowrth’s coloring on this book continues to be fantastic.

Story: 1 - Poor

Comments

  1. This is really disappointing to hear. I loved Brubaker’s run and was going to jump on this in trade, but I think you made me reconsider

  2. @lududsmaximus: I would advise at least picking up a couple issues, as everyone’s tastes are a little different, but I feel this title fell far and fast.  I enjoyed Diggle’s 600 & 601 issues.  And the art is still great.

  3. You’ve never heard of Antony Johnston? We’ve had him on the show before. He writes WASTELAND for Oni, wrote a really fun adaptation of DEAD SPACE and he wrote an excellent QUEN & COUNTRY: DECLASSIFIED mini.

  4. @conor: apart from the Declassified mini, none of those would have shown up on my radar.  I think I picked up the first couple issues of Wasteland and decided they weren’t for me.  Sounds like he’s just not the kind of writer I enjoy (Van Lente usually falls in that category, too), which is fine when he’s writing creator owned material or stuff based on video games, but a shame when he’s one of the writers of my favorite ongoings.
