I ‘ve really enjoyed watching Chris Samnee’s work evolve with each issue. I think he draws a wonderful DD and I liked his Spider-Man too(although there were a few panels where Spidey was without the webbing on his costume, and that kind of bugged me),but I think his pages of just Matt and Foggy are some of the best ever. I just really like his version of them, it’s so deceptively simple, he gets such a variety of facial expressions with so little line work it’s amazing. I don’t think anyone else could have made the change-over from Rivera/Martin work so smoothly, his style is different, but coupled with Rodriguez’s coloring it carries the same qualities that I loved from the series’ beginning. One of my favorite moments was the photo-op at the restaurant, anyone else catch the shadow that Matt projects? I also thought the panel with Spider-Ock’s shoulder being dislocated was awesome, with the “POP!” written in bone-letters it just adds a liitle more oompf to the action.

Mark Waid is no slouch either, the opening scene at the corner store was a fantastic bit of storytelling that showed just how thoroughly Waid understands Matt, and his life outside of the hero biz. The ending showed how just when we think we’re reading a fun team-up issue with a guest star, Waid proves again that the swashbucklin’ and smiles are mostly superficial, because just below that his DD has ups and downs too.

Daredevil is my favorite Marvel character, and this run has been such a fantastic addition to his saga, that I hope Waid and Samnee stay in Hell’s Kitchen for years. I went into this issue expecting a break in story to showcase Marvel’s new Spider-Man,and Waid managed to do that in the context of a really fun issue, but one that also showcased Matt.

  1. After reading this over, I have to apologize for all the just’s.

  2. Are you sure the actual score you gave is accurate? From reading the actual review, you seem to like the issue quite a bit more than what is reflected in the 1/5. 😉 I absolutely loved this issue. My review is here.

  3. The Die is Cast!
