Brubaker, Rucka, and Lark — the “Gotham Central” band is back together.

I’d hate to see this book get lost in all the (justifiable) excitement about more superhero-y books this week.  This was exactly what I’ve wanted to see in a ‘Daredevil’ story for ages now — Matt getting back to his life as a lawyer.  The setup is fairly typical of a legal drama: a Death Row inmate and unanswered questions (I thought of a similar episode of ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’, appropriately enough, as that show was an acknowledged influence on ‘Central.’)  The prominence of PI Dakota North is likely a sign of Rucka’s influence — if he can’t put Renee Montoya in a story, I suppose he’s going to go for the closest approximation; though Dakota (who I guess is basically the replacement for Jessica Jones since she went off with the Avengers) has been prominent in several recent issues, so it didn’t feel out of place.

I hope we see more Foggy and more Becky before the arc is over.  The Luke Cage cameo was also nice, though it probably doesn’t bear thinking about where this is supposed to fit in Avengers continuity.  Overall, this felt like a solid return to the core of the ‘Daredevil’ series, and when Daredevil is at its best, its as good as any comic out there, and Matt Murdock is as compelling as any hero.
