At first, I'll admit I was disappointed in this issue. But after I thought more about it, I realized how brilliant it was. Up to this point, Crossed had been all about showing over-the-top gore with a "nothing is sacred" attitude. But this issue was different. Ennis proved his talents as a writer by playing with my expectations. I kept waiting for that moment where I was going to turn the page and see a gruesome death, but it never came. That's what was brilliant about Crossed #5. My actual reading experience served to drive home the point Ennis was trying to get across. The idea that we as humans are so willing to let quiet moments of beauty pass us by, waiting for something more exciting or "significant" to happen. It's funny how human beings are always trying to define what is significant about our universe, when it's really up to the universe to do that. This world will be here after we've all "crossed", and its beauty won't cease to exist just because we have.
