Good News Everyone! I’ve finally figured out how to read a Criminal story! And that’s to wait for the trade. Now dont misunderstand me, I loved this arc and personally think that it’s one of the better ones Brubaker and Phillips have done, but most of that is because of this issue which packed in so much bloody, backstabbing goodness that it makes up for the last four issues being kind of boring. And yes I know thats all setupa and that’s how crime stories work, but to truly enjoy this I had to read all five over again just to remember what was going on. I’ll always love this series and what those two criminal genius’s come up with. But from now on I’m waiting for the trade.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Well the problem with trade waiting is that you don’t get any of the extra goodness of the back matter. I LOVE the back matter.

  2. Best way: buy the issues as the come out and, backmatter aside, read them all in one go.

  3. Admittingly I LOVE the backmatter. But a criminal trade just looks good on a book shelf. plus I’m a patient guy so trade waiting has never really been a problem. Plus it would be a bit cheaper then getting back issues

  4. I’d buy this in hardcover only if I was assured it wouldn’t be cancelled.

I buy it in two formats to help it stay alive.

  5. I love collecting this in issues.  The covers and bonus art with the back matter are awesome, and I always love the articles.  I’ve read a lot of good books and seen some great movies because of that stuff.

  6. @ScorpianMasada: I think Criminal is at the point that it will never really be cancelled unless Brubaker and Phillips have done all they can with subject matter.

  7. @Patman

Not true at all. We’ve got a year long wait for the next Criminal arc due to it not selling.

  8. I generally prefer reading and collecting the singles and then go for the re-read.  Although, the best comics shouldn’t require a re-read.  Point in case:  Invincible/Walking Dead.  Other than little tid-bits here and there, I’ve never thought, "hey?!  I NEED to go back and re-read because I don’t know what’s going on."

  9. @Nawida: ah, yeah I just read the sales charts and your right. However, my previous statement was’nt about sales but more along the lines of the creator owned property and it’s resilency. Sure Criminal doesnt sell great but Brubaker and Phillips can do it out of love because they are big enough names that they can do what they want. Yes we do have to wait a year but Criminal is’nt gone for good, simply on hiatus. Which alot of comics that use the limited series format do, like Atomic Robo or Hellboy/BPRD.
