A book like Countdown lives and dies based on how many of the storylines a reader is interested in.  The more threads of what is going on that a reader is following the more they’re going to enjoy the anthology, the fewer stories they’ve been brought into the more they’re just going to start skipping whole sections.

I like the Marvels so I’ve enjoyed Mary Marvel’s story, and have liked the journey through the multiverse with Donna, Kyle and Jason.  I’ve stopped caring about Jimmy Olson’s plight and was bored of the Karate Kid’s story line back in the Lightening Saga crossover in the pages of JLA/JSA.  So at this point I’m really only reading about half the book, which might mean that I’m not qualified to review it.

Unlike 52 which did a really good job of introducing me to characters I did not know and then making me care about them, most of these characters rely on my already caring about them in order to want to pay attention to what they’re doing.  I care about Donna Troy and Kyle Rayner, so I like that story thread but I could give a toss about Karate Kid and I’m not being convinced that I ever should.

The characters feel less like characters than chess pieces.  We’ve had virtually no character development, the multiverse group for example has apparently been tripping around existance for months now and all that they’ve managed to do characterwise is put Jason Todd into a new costume.  The weird love triangle between Jason, Donna and Kyle not only has not been resolved but it has not even been touched for weeks or more.

I regretted quitting 52 before it picked up and having to go back to trades to get it.  With only ten issues left I’ll stay onto the end of Countdown, but unless something happens to really tie everything together and get me going back to my long boxes to reread the entire series again I regret not waiting for the trade.

On an issue specific note, this art was some of the best we’ve seen in a long time.
