Stuff happened, but gosh it was hard to tell what it was. Some of that was the terrible, terrible art, and some of it was the story itself.
The story threads of 52 tied together in an elegant and seamless fashion, not every story had to be contorted to fit in with every other story and when the stories did dove-tail they did so in a way that seemed natural. In Countdown everyone just randomly seems to end up in the same place in one of those coincidences that only happen in fiction. For some of the storylines it makes sense to have them arrive on Apokolips (such as the Mary Marvel/Harley Quinn thread). Others it just seems a case of the writers deciding that Apokolips was an easy place to throw them so they could have everyone meet everyone.
"Hey we've got Piper running around the midwestern United States, let's teleport him to Apokolips."
I think the major problem I've had with the series has been that by trying to match it with the ongoing DC continuity, as opposed to removing it and letting it be its own thing as 52 was, there's too much time spent trying to tie events in Countdown into the rest of the DCU. The Piper story for example sprung from the death of Flash and then for most of it was about the two Rogues running from being included in the Salvation Run mini. Now when trying to tie that plot thread back into with the rest it seems to be a case of round peg clashing with a square hole.
Nine issues left.
P.S.: The Bruce Timm drawn backup history of Harley Quinn was delightful. While the main book's art made my eyes weep, Timm is a master and clearly loves to draw Harley. I wish we'd see Paul Dini and Bruce Timm on a book again at some point. I mean apart from this.
Art: 1 - Poor
I couldn’t agree with you more about the random Piper situation. What the hell happened there. Why do I always have to wait until next week for something that probably isn’t going to be any better? In regards to the art, I’d give it a three. It’s been worse and the Harley Quinn outfit rawked.
