I wasn’t expecting to like this issue, IGN gave it a 6/10. That said I shouldn’t have worried, I’ve been reading since issue 2 and enjoyed it so far. I don’t feel a need to buy this series, but I never regret picking them up anyway.

This story involves John trying to take a day off from the high stakes world of magic and catch up with friends, which leads to him butting heads with Papa Midnite. I actually know Papa Midnite from one of the early Hellblazer stories so I had a frame of reference here. I thought they kept him pretty well intact, aside from looking like a supervillain (tight black leather pants, shoes with teeth painted on them, etc). The story’s fun, kind of a nice one and done. I had a few scrupples with the story tho: John is never caught off guard, he’s 2 steps ahead of everyone in every instance as though that happens so the story doesn’t drag. Another, there’s a small time jump from last issue which threw me off; Zatanna and John broke up (when did they get back together?) , when did John settle in New York? Alot of stuff happens “off-screen” and I just went with it but I felt the narrative was thrown off.

Somebody pointed out that the regular artist has been MIA on this, which I guess means he was only on issue 1 which I missed. Anyway I like the art, I thought it’s a good fit for the last few issues. That said I’d like to see how the regular guy handles art duties.

All in all, if you liked the last few issues you should like this one. Plus, when was the last time you read a one and done from DC (and the 0 issues don’t count)?

  1. Eh? Guedes did the first 3 issues, I’m quite sure. The colorist makes Neves stuff look reasonably similar.
