I bought this largely because I found the cover striking. So score one for Nathan Fox. On a less superficial level, I also like that this book has a conflict implicit at its core and an engine to create stories: physics is going crazy, these are the guys who deal with it. Simple, elegant, neat.

As for what’s inside, well, this feels more like an Image book than a Vertigo book, but I’ll take my weird science where I can get it. Robbi Rodriguez’s art is not like anything else I’m seeing in comics right now. Some of his character designs and settings look almost like something out of a Sylvain Chomet animated film (Triplets of Belleville, The Illusionist).

As for story, what we’ve got here is essentially a workplace drama/comedy where the characters happen to have a really weird job. Oliver has established the personalities of at least two of the major characters. A third character gets a juicy bit at the end. Still, I hope Oliver brings everybody out a whole lot more in issue 2 since the character interactions are the fun of these sorts of stories. (I mean, aside from the weird science.)

I look forward to issue 2 and hope this creative team can build on a really solid start.

  2. Agreed, I love that comparison for Robbi Rodriguez’s art with a splash of Naoki Urasawa for the faces. Just looking at the main charcter’s father on the first page is like I’m starring at Geischt from UrasawaXTezuka’s Pluto all over again.
