After being out of comics for a while, I was looking for some of my favorite artists and writers that I enjoyed in the past. Then I saw that John Byrne had a new series coming out called ‘Cold War’.
Thought I would try it out for old times sake. I was not disappointed.
This book has Byrne’s classic art fitting perfectly with his Cold War time period story.
Byrne creates a simple setup for the series with characters who play off each other well.
For me, the only bittersweet aspect of an otherwise fun read was the price point of $3.99.

  1. I hear you on the IDW $3.99! I really enjoyed the recent Next Men mini though. I wish my store actually had this issue so I can check it out.

  2. Couldn’t disagree more KM. I really loved the latest NextMen run, but just like there is “Bad Chaykin”, this was bad Byrne. The art was certainly good, although I found it a bit stark. But the character and settings? Did you find the bedroom scene sexy? I thought it felt SO cliche. And the heroes leering harassment of the female scientist was trying to copy Bond from “Moonraker” and his interactions with Dr. Goodhead, but it came across boorish and creepy, not playfully charming.

What a sour puss on the hero btw. Seemed like disdain was his primary emotion the whole issue.

This was TOO derivative of a Bond story, unfortunately, I think Byrne occasionally stumbles because he has such an intense love for many things early 60s…his intentions are pure, but the result is cheesy, without any sense of irony or humour. I’m one and done with this, but look forward to see what Byrne will do next, he’s a very talented creator who I still think has some great work still to come. But “Cold War” is not it, unfortunately.
