Concluding the first arc of
the series "Taster's Choice," this issue brings about the sort of plot
twist one might expect to see much further down the line.
That should not be taken as a complaint; on the contrary, Chew--like any good Image comic--is a good title to turn to for surprises. With Image one can never know what to suspect. The same could be said if a handful of Marvel and DC titles but and Image anything goes. That's important an important part of Image Comics' success as a publisher, and Chew takes full advantage of it.
[SPOILER ALERT] In this issue, shit hits the fan. Tony Chu makes the bust of his career (a warehouse-like vault filled with caged chickens to be sold to the black market) and rescues his brother Chow. Shortly afterward he discovers the identity of Even Pepper's killer--Mason Savoy, Chu's partner.
Chu makes a failed attempt at arresting Savoy, resulting in Savoy's departure from the USFDA. Oh, and he takes one of Chu's ears with him. Savoy is badass that way.
Of the first five issues, all expertly crafted by writer John Layman and artist Rob Guillory, I think this on the strongest. Chew #5 is the conclusion of a wonderful opening arc of a series that promises to deliver great stories for a long time.

Well said – this was a great issue and the plot twist was out of left field. I can’t wait to see where this goes.
