I plugged the first issue of this series to my customer, as though John Layman owed me money, and only by selling his comic would he be able to pay me back.  I love the concept.  I really like his writing style.  And while this was still a very strong issue, it definitely didn’t hold up to the first.  But that’s ok.

I’m a fan of the story structure Layman plays with: prologue, story, and then epilogue for each chapter (issue).  And each issue is like a chapter from a book.  Yes, there are little tease cliffhanger details, but, so far, both issues have been complete stories in, and of themselves.

Both writer and artist seem to have a really tight grasp of structure.  Guillory’s use of outlines around the characters at certain times is tight, and a fantastic mood evoker.  And the occasional stray from pallete (there are pages that are all orange and green with one really vivid outline of red on one panel) really draws in focus.  I’m glad these two are working together, and have found a unique story to tell with each other.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
