I want to like this book so much — I like Carol as a character and I think the new (when is it no longer new?) costume is great.

This is the only Kelly Sue DeConnick work I’ve read, but I always enjoy her appearances on various podcasts. She seems like a good egg. And I’ve even dug all of the artists, despite the wide variety of styles on display. And Jordie Bellaire’s colors on the last several issues have definitely made this book a joy to look at.

But something just isn’t clicking for me, and it bugs me that I can’t nail it down. I like KSD’s brisk, quippy dialogue, and the plots are entertaining, but I’m wondering if her scripts are getting misinterpreted by the artist in some way. I frequently feel like a panel got cut, or some dialogue was changed at the last second and the change subsequently created an odd beat.

I just don’t know. I had the same reaction to Avengers Assemble last week. I’m hooked enough to see where this current story is going, and I want to see Carol’s brain-stuff get resolved, but I can’t help feel like something’s not right here.

To tie to the book’s aviation theme, Captain Marvel is a twin engine aircraft. It’s a good-looking plane and it’s maintaining altitude, but the right engine coughs every now and again, and I’m wondering if it’s just an air bubble in the fuel line or a sign of a more dire problem.
