Captain America Patriot #2 is the first comic I have reviewed. It demanded I make the effort. This is one of the few mini series launched lately I feel matters. Jeff Mace is not typically a name you associate with Captain America. It is not a name associated by many fans period. The “Liberty Legion” and “Patriot” are known to few outside long time Marvelites.
Well thanks to KARL KESEL and MITCH BREITWEISER we are getting a look at the tenure of man who carved the tertiary period of Captain America’s legacy. The story up to this point has been not only well told but worth telling. Jeff Mace is not Steve Rogers, he is a Brooklyn born reporter, a “tough guy” if you will. He was not a skinny kid who got powers from a serum. He is a man moved to super heroic action by Captain America’s example.
So post WW2 we have a man with the eye and mind of a reporter. A man who loves his country, who is called to be the living symbol of America. An America that is taking an ugly turn during the “Red Scare”. A man who is not likely to follow orders blindly. Jeff Mace is a great character.
Breitweiser’s visuals bring a beauty to this book that is period perfect. It is almost Milt Caniff like yet also very cinematic. The art was the hook for me.
In an age where so much is same this book stands apart just enough to warrant the admission price. A triumph for Marvel.

Buy it, enjoy it, tell a friend!

Story: 4 - Very Good
