In the background of the main Flashpoint story is a vicious war between Wonder Woman and Aquaman. This war has impacted more of the Flashpoint tie-ins that the main book and at times has been more intriguing. “Flashpoint: Emperor Aquaman” #2 continues the story but from Aquaman’s slanted perspective.

Writer Tony Bedard not only moves the story along to the inevitable climax but also dives into Arthur Curry’s backstory (no pun intended).  Bedard’s Aquaman is a violent, angry Aquaman driven by rage and a bloodthirsty desire for revenge. This is a welcome change from the character we’ve known in the past. The flashbacks are integrated well into the main story and we get plenty of details on how and why Aquaman sunk western Europe. We also see his final plan unfold which leads to the fantastic final page. Some of the dialogue is a little hamfisted and it sometimes seems that the characters are only speaking for our benefit. But I really have no problem with that. This is a fun issue that feels important.

Vincente Cifuentes moves up from inker to penciler in this issue and maintains the look and feel developed by Ardian Syaf in the first issue. In fact their art is strikingly similiar which is something I really appreciate. His underwater depictions and sharp detail really stand out. Overall his characters look good but often with little variance in their expressions. But that’s a minor gripe on an otherwise nice looking issue.

I actually found myself more drawn into this story after reading this issue. I enjoyed the first book but wasn’t particularly excited. After part two, I can’t wait to see how things play out.
