As a long time Captain America subscriber I kinda rolled my eyes when reading that his series was being split up into two titles including a renumbered book. But once seeing that Ed Brubaker would be teaming up with Steve McNiven, I was instantly intrigued.

In this first issue Brubaker gives us what feels look a classic Captain America story. We get some fantastic moments between characters and a story which perfectly blends everything from touching emotional moments to flashbacks to cinematic action sequences. It’s just brilliantly constructed and as you read the book there’s no denying that Brubaker has a strong familiarity with his characters and their history. Add an end page that had me grinning from ear to ear and you’ve got an issue that is simply wonderful.

McNiven’s pencils are nothing short of amazing. His characters are beautifully drawn with such crisp detail and realism. As I mentioned the action sequences have a cinematic feel to them and a lot of that is due to McNiven’s eye for action. Every bullet fired, sheild toss, and explosion are vividly detailed. I would also be doing a terrible disservice if I didn’t mention Justin Ponsor’s colors. Talk about a perfect compliment to McNiven’s pencils. This is an example of what a book should look like.

There’s hardly anything bad to say about this issue and it’s got me completely sold. Brubaker and McNiven are such a quality creative team and if this issue is an example of what we can expect, we’re in for a great ride, one that could rival Brubaker’s classic work with Steve Epting.
