One of my favourite writers teamed with one of my favourite artists and yet, somehow, I didn’t have the highest hopes for this one shot.  I guess sometimes a 40 page story set in the past can sometimes seem a little indulgent, and even pointless.  There are times when they’re great (The Golden Age anyone) and times when they just seem unneccesary.  This however,  was great.  Robinson nails his characters in the short time he has, and captures the overall spirit of Cap perfectly.  The man is barely in the uniform, but it doesn’t matter.  This is the world war two adventure story distilled beautifully.  Then, when you combine story and art, everything is right with the world.  The essence of this fact is captured by the two page spread by Marcos Martin a couple of pages in just after Steve’s rejection by the military.  That’s what comic book storytelling is folks – breathe it in.  This was a treat from start to finish.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent
