I had never heard of Cullen Bunn or Francesco Francavilla before picking up this series, so this title really has become an unexpected pleasure for me. This issue still appears to be the middle of the story, but it feels like this arc may turn out to be a classic Captain America storyline. First of all, Cap and Black Widow work so well together as partners. They are both about stealth and acrobatics, and when written true to their history (as they are here), the characters both have an unsentimental, hardnosed attitude towards getting the job done. Cap and the Widow know what it takes to fight a war. In this comic, they are battling three “War of the Worlds” type Hydra tripods in an alternate universe. Such a simple set up, but Francavilla makes it all look spectacular. I haven’t counted, but there seem to be significantly fewer words in this comic than is generally the case. For instance, on the two center pages, a total of eight words appear. Bunn wisely lets the art carry the reader through the story. Cap is leaping, arms outstretched. Then he’s falling, arms and legs splayed in an attempt to balance and land on his feet. In one panel, the color captures the mood beautifully as Cap’s face is in black and white while he seriously considers a yellow mini bomb in his red gloved hand. After reading this comic, I paged back through it several times in order to savor the visuals. The villain(s) to this story arc is the innovative concept of Vennema Multiversal, and the Vennemas are about to sic a nasty team of alternate reality baddies on Cap and Black Widow. I’m really looking forward to following this story arc as it progresses.
