After how the title started, I can definitely see how some may not feel as strongly about the current storyline. Taking a huge tonal and art shift can sometimes be detrimental to a book, but for me, this series, while not perfect, is still serving up some good comics. After the emotional journey that was the first storyline, this story arch finds Cap knee deep in a pulpy, sci-fi robot conspiracy. It loads of fun. In the first two issues, we see our characters begin to dig into the mysteries surrounding the attack on Fred Davis, the man who replaced Bucky in the 50s. In this issue, the mysteries layers are fully revealed, and I find the plot pretty intense and intriguing. I’m a huge fan of pulp comics and stories, so this is rigt up my alley as our heroes find themselves split apart and seemingly defeated in the face of a global threat. The story ends on a great cliffhanger, and the wheels are in motion for a really fun ending.

Francavilla has become one of my favorite artists over the past couple of years. He has this amazing sense for mood and color, and he’s not shy about trying different things for the comic page. As an example, I would point those that read the issue to the two page spread of the star shaped panel that is surrounded by other panels. It’s an elegant way to take care of a fight sequence without drowning the book in too much frivilous action. He does a wonderful job of creating a dark and threatening mood for the characters and the story. My only criticisms is that I felt the figure drawing in a few panels was a bit wonky.

Overall, this book has continued to perform strongly for me. While some of the issue is heavy on dialogue or has a weird art panel, I have to say that I’m pleased with the current storyline. It’s not perfect but it’s still a great time.
