Finally Captain America is back on track, and with this issue it feels like we’re in for another Brubaker classic arc as the focus shifts almost completely from Bucky Barnes and his trial. There’s lots of Steve Rogers here, and Brubaker writes him better than anyone else working in comics today; the sheer power and dominance that comes from every line he utters is truly magnificent and the feeling of dread you feel for the star witness in the trial is nothing compared to the respect you gain for Steve. Then there’s the other thread about Sin escaping from prison and planning her revenge on America; her plot is the kind of thing Brubaker does best, and it bleeds perfectly into the arc as a whole. Butch Guice as penciller remains one of the highlights of the book; it’s dark and gritty, reminiscent of Steve Epting’s definitive style from the book’s early days, but it seems to evoke a sense of originality and flair that Epting’s work sometimes lacked. It’s great to be able to say again, but: Captain America is possibly the perfect comic book.
