Next month will mark the one-year anniversary of the assassination of Steve Rogers. One year ago the primary character died and STILL the book remains a highly regarded book. Can anyone but the team behind the Superman books back in the day make that claim?
Cap 35 maintains the high quality of writing and artwork that the book that has been maintained by the book restarted since Disassembled. The sheer scale and brilliance of the Red Skull's plan cannot be underestimated. It's clear he's been planning this since issue one of this volume and what a plan it is. It isn't enough to kill America's national hero via his beloved Agent 13. It isn't enough to leave a great section of Americans homeless. It isn't enough to raise the gas prices to even more astronomical heights. It isn't enough to enlist a Boston Massacre-type fiasco on the gates of the White House (have to appreciate the irony) to cripple SHIELD. It isn't enough to ensure a riot on the steps of the Lincoln Monument. It most definitely isn't even enough to send the Serpent Squad to kill all the senators in Washington. It's clear things are going to get much much darker before the dawn. It's clear this is going to go down as one the great epics of Marvel history.
Bucky continues his tenure as the reluctant Captain America and it's been fun to watch so far. I don't know if it's been due to his years as an operative in a country where dissent is rewarded with a stint to the gulags, but it's kind of funny to see Bucky look at the protesters as "whackos" To be fair, some of the protesters' signs make no sense (There's a lot of issues on the table but I don't think "Free Speech" is one of them and I don't believe "NO!" works very well as a picket sign) and they're fairly rabid, but it's still interesting to see Bucky respond to a very American institution with a certain amount of antagonism. Seeing a Captain America who's still getting a feel about America actually means is an interesting concept that Brubaker looks to mining in a masterful way.
I should also point out the artwork of Butch Guice here, who is as on the ball as he always is. Flipping between fill-in spots on both Captain America and Iron Man, Guice seems to fit the tone of the book very well. While very close to Epting in style, Guice manages to make his mark in this issue with some very dynamic shots of Bucky quelling the riot. Many shots, especially the shot of Bucky throwing his shield at the two Kane-Meyer thugs and the various acrobatic poses on the backdrop of Washington, seems to invoke earlier days of the best of such iconic runs as Steranko, Englehart, and Gruenwald. Kudos to Guice for some very compelling artwork.
The Red Skull has never been so dangerous. Captain America has never been so needed. The darker the night, the brighter the dawn. This book is just getting better and better.
