On line reports indicate that Ed Brubaker is winding up his epic run on “Captain America,” but it seems to me that he still has plenty of dramatic inspiration left in him. In this comic, Bravo and the Hydra Queen continue their proxy war against Cap, using one of Cap’s brainwashed old friends against him. There’s not a lot of plot development in this comic, just some great action. And there’s some teasing dialogue that serves to increase the dramatic tension. What exactly does Scourge mean when he tells Captain America, “You sold this country out to the bad guys?” Bravo and his Queen appear to have some political agenda, but whom do they consider to be the “bad guys?” I love that in true psycho fashion, Scourge blames Captain America for his crimes. “You made me do this!” he shrieks, literally with tears in his eyes.
Patch Zircher, who provides all but two pages of the art, does a great job of capturing the powerful movements and physical presence of Captain America. I think most long time comic fans were very pleased with the way Spider-Man moves in the new movie. Spidey leaps around with the great flexibility and acrobatic aplomb that we have come to expect from the comics. Similarly, Zircher captures the classic Captain America moves and powerful fighting style in this comic. Cap and Scourge are worthy opponents (although Scourge is supposed to be stronger) and battering ram fists fly. Both men propel and knock each other through the air. There are also nice touches in the quiet panels. I like the way the lights of the flying car’s dashboard light up Sharon Carter’s face. The panel where Sharon weeps after shooting Scourge is very expressive. The tone that Ed Brubaker has brought to “Captain America” is much darker than in the past, and the colorists who have worked on the book have reflected that darkness. Paul Mounts continues that trend with an appropriately twilit story.
