Previously on Cable and X-Force: Cable was captured by the Avengers and his uncle Havok. Cable and his team have been globetrotting, saving the world, and making a huge mess wherever they go. Since Cable’s capture the rest of the team have been preventing possible world ending events from happening.
I’ve enjoyed this series from the beginning. It doesn’t get as much love as writers’ Dennis Hopeless’ other Marvel book Avengers Arena, but I would say its just as good. This issue has Hopeless handling the plot, Cullen Bunn writing the script, series regular Larroca on art duties for half the book, and Gerardo Sandoval doing the art for the other half.
The script is solid. You notice the difference between Hopeless and Bunn, but the script is still solid. The story bounces between Forge and Dr. Nemesis trying to stop a giant worm monster from destroying Lisbon, an interrogation of Cable by his uncle Havok at the Avengers mansion, and the distant future where Cable’s daughter/sister (sounds gross right?), Hope Summers, is slap fighting with the future version of herself.
That last plot thread is the least entertaining and I have to admit that whenever Hope Summers is featured in this series I yawn. I like the character of Hope Summers but her inclusion in this series seems forced (that’s a bad pun). Her adventures in the future haven’t made her anymore likeable. Her future self is just as boring and as much of a non-entity as the original version is. Not much happens in the much distant future so we can shelve Hope Summers for now.
Back in the here and now, Marvel’s best bromance are trying to wisecrack a giant worm monster away. Forge and Dr. Nemesis are the comic relief for this book and I love it. Forge is a tech oriented super genius and Nemesis is more of a bio-engineer mad scientist. The relationship between them distracts from the melodrama happening in the rest of the book and it is much needed. Meanwhile, Havok and Cable are having valuable family time and it looks like Cable has sold Havok on the concept of the series. Namely, X-Force can go places and do things that the X-Men and the Avengers can’t. Now that that is all cleared up the book sets up an epic battle for the next issue between team X-Force and some Uncanny Avengers (Thor and Rogue).
I’ve been a big fan of Larroca’s art since the get go. And although the story can clearly be separated between the present and the future it looks like the two artists on this book just split art duties down the middle of the book. Larroca handling the first half and Sandoval handling the second half. I feel it would have flowed better if Larroca penciled the present and Sandoval penciled the future. Sandoval isn’t trying to mimic Larroca. He’s doing his own style and I like what he does. My one complaint is that present Hope and future Hope look identical.
It’s a fun read! They gave Domino a break this issue. She was the star of the last two issues. She is another highlight of the series and they should give that girl her own book. Overall, story is a 4 and Art is a 3.
Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good
Art: 3 - Good
Why can’t I edit my review? Total site fail.
Is it because of the paragraph breaks? It’s a glitch that’s been around for a while that happens when you choose a “spoiler” review. Best thing to do is choose “spoiler-free” but then but a big ****SPOILERS**** warning at the start of the review. You could email one of the guys and ask them to remove this review and then you can re-do it, if it bothers you. I had this issue in the past and that was the solution.
Thanks! It also copied twice for some reason. Pretty sure that was my fault.
