Cable to me represents the loner tough guy character. Even more than Wolverine this is a guy who has seen just about everything, and is ready for almost any situation. He is a one man army who doesn't need team to get the job done. In this issue we see him confront Bishop for the first time since the end of Messiah Complex. Even after being shot Cable is primarily concerned about his mission's safety rather than his own. He then finds a way to use the crowd to escape from Bishop and prepare for a time jump. Now we see his plan break apart when he realizes his time mechanism was broken in the fight. The last panel leaves Cable in a situation where it looks like he has no escape. This is the fun thing for me with this character, next issue we get to see how he get out of this impossible situation.
Also, in this issue we see how Bishop escaped from Muir Island and caught up to Cable. While there are some logistical problems with his escape, like how he got from Forge's workshop back to Muir Island. I really like how tenacious he is presented, I could imagine him going year by year until he found his clue. This is a great villain, he is someone who is convinced he is in the right, and is working for the greater good. Also, how he uses time travel to trap Cable is a great use of the concept, and the writer did it in a way that I was able to follow along with.
The art in this issue is decent. At this point you either love Olivetti's style or you hate it. I find it suitable for the story, and it reflects the grittiness and the violence of the story well. Yes, our two main characters look like they may be related to the Incredible Hulk, but so far it hasn't distracted me too much.
Overall I like this issue, and this series so far. It presents a great comparison between the hero and the villain, and shows how they are actually very similar except for their beliefs on the child.

Story: 4 - Very Good

This is a really good, fair review of the strengths of the book. I actually agree with this whole assessment (except I don’t love the art; I don’t think it’s bad). I just wish there was a little bit more to the book. Better world-building or a mystery (besides, ‘why won’t they tell us the deal with the damn baby?’) or some humor or SOMETHING.
I do agree that Cable works as a solo character — I really loved David Tischmann’s brief run on the old book, from around issue 100, before it turned into Soldier X.
Thanks, I definitly agree with it needing some humor. My first Cable series was Cable & Deadpool, which made humor work with a serious character like Nate in it. I meant to say my review did have spoilers, and have now fixed it, but to anyone who I spoiled things for I apologize.
@chewie810 — Cable & Deadpool is one of my alltime favorite Marvel books! (Especially the first 35 issues when it really was a Cable AND Deadpool book). I’m going to take some convincing that this plot/series was worth killing C&D for.
The annoying thing is that, if you’ve read Duane Swierczynski’s fiction (and his blog, Secret Dead, which I adore), he’s a very very funny writer. I think he’d do a great Deadpool.
