Powell’s art nearly always seems black and white to me, even when its vibrantly colored.  I can’t think of any other artist whose pencils and inks are so viscerally antique looking, that the color seems to drain off the page.

Thus, I must give a gigantic thumb up to Dave Stewart, whose colors were such a perfect match for Powell’s art that I had to go back and look at my Goon trades to see what the other colorists were doing wrong.  Turns out: nothing.  Stewart just uses a higher caliber of negative space with his colors, and it works well here.  (This isn’t overly surprising, were you to ask me to name a comic colorist, I could come up with three, and Stewart’s would be the first to my tongue).

The only glitch in the art seems to be the shading and coloring of the female character.  With such perfect attention to Buzzard, his ward, and a group of snake handlers, it seems odd that the only female character in the book is drawn inconsistently.

The story is straight-on Goony goodness (but without actual Goon), and has me excited for how Powell is going to place Buzzard and his ward back into the main storyline.

The backup story by Powell and Hotz is fantastically creepy in a different way.  A “keep Lenny away fro those rabbits, Geroge” kind of way.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Eric Powell is IMO one of the best in the biz. He has a real talent for the horror/camp comic. Wish this were an ongoing series.
