Jane Espenson was my second favorite Buffy scripter – her “Earshot” was among the show’s best episodes, behind only “Once More With Feeling,” “Chosen,” and maybe “Hush.”  The geeky humor, deep characterization of marginal characters (although at this point Harmony is no longer that) and witty dialogue shine through in this issue, and Jeanty’s art is reliable.

But Espenson’s forte is the small screen, and the phrasing and pacing of sequential art work differently, making this awkward at times and a bit too condensed.  I wouldn’t have minded had this story been expanded or continued into a longer arc.  Whatever quibbles, this was a fun read, and after the meh Fray arc, this title has had a strong couple months, what with Jeph Loeb surprising the world by writing a more than halfway decent comic book and Jane Espenson bringing to these characters the distinctive and unmistakable voice we remember so well from the show.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good

  1. This felt like it had potential, but I just didn’t think Jane Espenson had any idea how to write for a comic book.  I guess it doesn’t help that i’ve never liked Harmony.  I know she’s supposed to be annoying, and that’s fine, but a whole issue devoted to her?

  2. It just wasn’t a very tight issue, very average. The last issue by Loeb was sooo good, I just didn’t think this one-shot/arc starter felt important enough. The revelation at the end should have been much more important, not to meniton this issue completely changed the world, literally.

SPOILER ALERT !!!!!!! FOLLOWING SPOILER FOLLOWING !!!!!!!!! now everybody on the planet knows about the supernatural creatures the slayers are trying to slay, and prefer them over the "good"guys.
