This comic was…alright. It was a fun little romp involving a black hole, the Legion of Superheroes (the original three, not the clusterf*ck that was last weeks LoSH), and the Doom Patrol (the original ones of those as well as I’m pretty sure).

JMS wrote a pretty good issue, despite the fact that he forgot Imra or Saturn Girl doesn’t use her mouth to speak, but that isn’t a big deal really. The funny banter was good and the story was pretty sweet.

The combination of the two teams, especially in what seems like their throwback uniforms is actually pretty awesome and reminds me of something that if written in the 70’s or 60’s, Tom Katers would laugh about while drinking a beer. You don’t need to know a lot of continuity with either team, you just have to know who they are, Doom Patrol = misfits and Legion = Superman fangirls.

The art by Saiz was really nice and clean and everything you’d expect from him, there isn’t anything overly flashy, he shows up and gets the job done.
The colors by Tom Chu are also very fitting to the story and get the job done in just the way they need to.

To me, what was finger lickin’ good was the lettering by Rob Leigh. He was seen rather than heard, something letterers should always do. However at a certain point in the story when something changes one of the characters, the lettering changes with them. It was just a really fun little addition that represented the kind of change that would actually happen.

My big gripe with the issue is the ending. This is supposed to be a two parter, but in actuality you can just read this and get a full story, there are some un-important un-answered questions lazily thrown in at the end by JMS to make you want to pick up the next one.

All in all it was a simple enjoyable story all around and seeing a simple Legion story is always a pretty rare thing.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
