Dam you JMS you really know how to pull at my heart strings. I have to admit the beginning had me wondering whether this issue would be JMS’ first big misstep on this title. Amazingly a few pages after this thought entered my mind the story transformed from a throw away tale of a girls night out into an emotional punch in the gut that I will remember for years to come. The characterization of Z, WW, and Babs are all spot on and the surprising connection to one of the greatest Batman stories ever told just fits. It amazes me how JMS can revisit this legendary tale in such an effective manner. Usually, this technique feels gimmicky but here JMS’ tale only adds to the emotional impact of the original story, while also showing the unfortunate side of being a superhero and how the superhero community is truly a family. The art here is also pretty solid. Nothing that would make me run out and get another book drawn by the same artist but good enough that it fit the tone of the book and never took me out of the story. As long as the art can do that, I can’t really complain. My overall assessment is that DC should sign JMS to a lifetime contract to write this book because its really Superheroes done right.
