The grand finale of the Megistus storyline is here. This issue provided a lot of great action with a large cast of characters, and delivered a fun story at the same time. I love how the Challenger's and the heroes with them gain entrance to Megistus' lair. The use of Wonder Woman's plain and GL's ring showed how the series up until the issue connects and ever event before plays some part here. Also, the way Superman maneuvered Megistus into powering up Ultraman was genius, and shows Clark's courage and intelligence. The big surprise of this issue was June, and how she stepped up to the plate at the least expected moment.
My only real problem is that Megistus just doesn't come across as a cosmic threat. I understand how devastating it would be if his plan went through, but he comes across as more of a mad scientist figure, rather than a villain who can take on this large group of characters. I won't be too sorry if we don't see Megistus again. Also, Firestorm being captured and used as a fuel source is getting a little old.
Ordway's art is fantastic and really evokes the silver age feel that the story has. As a GL fan the scene where he finally recharges his ring is a great heroic scene, and sets the artistic tone for the rest of the issue.
Waid and Company have provided us a fitting end to the first year's storyline and hopefully will continue to provide great stories until he leaves us with issue 16.
